The Battlefield Is In Your Mind

Every battle we face starts in our minds.  The mind is your battlefield.  To be honest, everything starts in the mind.  In order for a body part to move or anything in your body to function, it starts with a message from your brain.  Scientifically speaking, the brain is the control centre.  I think we all understand this as we learned it in school, but what if we were to apply this to our spiritual walk with God.  In scriptures we are told to guard our hearts and mind, but why the mind?

Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what’s God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will – Romans 12:2

There are 2 instructions given to know what God’s will is.  First, not to be conformed to the world and the things of the world.  We are in the world, but not from the world.  When the Israelites left Egypt, God told them not to participate in the worship of pagan gods.  The Israelites were called to be different, holy, set apart for God. This commandment never changed, God is still wanting us to be set apart there are still things we shouldn’t participate in.

The second instruction was to be transformed. God is so good that He told us how to do this…by renewing our mind.  Even those that don’t believe in God, understand the concept of renewing their minds.  Some have said, write little sticky notes of positive messages to yourself and place them on your mirror, in the morning you will see the message to improve your self-esteem.  Literally, what they are doing is replacing negative thoughts with good thoughts, they are renewing their mind.

…Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. – Philippians 4:8

The good news – God is doing the renewing of our mind part.  He is the one that does the changing in our minds, hearts, and lives.  As we seek Him, He reveals Himself, His ways and also reveals the things in our hearts.  He takes the things in our hearts and transforms them.  I like the NLT translation of Romans 12:2.

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

When we learn God’s will for ourselves, we are also learning His ways, and we can have the same mindset as Christ.

This is where the battle begins.  The enemy doesn’t want you and me to have the same mindset as Jesus.  Jesus came on earth to fulfill a purpose.  He knew what His purpose was and wasn’t going to let anyone stop Him from fulfilling it.  He also knows who He was.  The world didn’t know who He was and many times Jesus told them but He was still rejected.  This didn’t change His mind of knowing who He was.  This is the struggle we face.  God has given us the Word of God and in it, it reveals God’s full plan.  It tells us who we are and where we came from…but sometimes we forget and allow the enemy to start speaking doubt to us.  It is not a new trick…he’s been doing it since the beginning with Adam and Eve.

To think Adam and Eve walked with God, had authority and dominion on earth, but still forgot who they were.  They had forgotten they were made in the very image of God, so when the enemy came and said you will be like God…they missed it…they forgot who they were.  And satan is still doing the same thing now.  How many times has God spoken a word over your life, then soon after doubt comes in?  All satan needs you to do is doubt who you are in Christ.  Christians, we need to know who we are.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession… – 1 Peter 2:9

It is important for us to keep on our armor of God.  The bible says to put on the full armor of God so you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.  One part of the armor is the helmet of salvation.  Jesus is our salvation.  If we take our minds off Jesus, by removing our helmet, we are left exposed.  This helmet is there to protect against the doubt of salvation, and infilling our minds with fear, the enemy wants to send our way.   As we previously discussed, everything starts with the mind, if the enemy can attack the mind, it will affect everything else in your spiritual walk with God.

Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, – 2 Corinthians 10:5

New Living Translation
We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.

This goes for our own thoughts.  No longer will we allow the enemy to attack our minds with disbelief, but we will remain grounded in the work of the cross.  The next time satan wants to speak doubt and fear in you, use the word of God, as Jesus did in the wilderness, against him.  Resist the devil and he will flee.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I am taking every thought that is contrary to what You have said about me and casting them down today.  I ask You to clear my mind from all stress, unbelief, doubt, and fear that wants to run through my mind.  Help me to focus on You, Your goodness and what You have said about me. In Jesus’ Name

Amen

  3. I have to remember to put on my armor of God every day. It takes intentionality to stay focused on Jesus but the victory in Him is sweet …
